Christmas in July: Styling the perfect tablescape for your mid-year festivities

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Well, it is if you celebrate Christmas in July… and why not?! Any excuse for a party, we say!

Why do people celebrate Christmas in July?

As Australia is one of the only countries in the world who celebrates Christmas in Summer, it has become tradition for many Australians to have a second Christmas celebration during our winter month of July. Growing up watching the other half of the world celebrate Christmas with cosy jumpers, hot chocolate in front of the fireplace and Christmas snow angels in every festive movie you can think of… Christmas in July has become an Aussie tradition that we absolutely love to embrace!

Whether you are a full enthusiast and relish in the opportunity to pop on an ugly Christmas jumper, break out your tree, or just looking for a reason to have a fun dinner - we’ve broken down all of the elements you need to create the perfect Winter wonderland table setting!

Colour Palette

When it comes to the Christmas colour palette, you can’t go past the traditional red, green and white. But it you’re looking to do something a little more daring, pick one of these colours as your focal point, and add a contrasting colour to make it pop – for example, red with pink!

Playing with the different shades will add a modern take on your tablescape, with an individual look that will surprise and impress your guests!

Florals

One of the chicest ways to add depth to your table styling is florals. Depending on your chosen colour palette, there are a number of in-season options for July.

If you are working with the traditional red and green colour palette, we love Molluca Balm and Antheriums. If you can get your hands on some green hydrangea, that would look perfect too!

Candles

One of our favourite things about Christmas in July is the winter nature of it, compared to our standard Summer Christmas. Make the most of a cosy night indoors, dim the lights and fill your table with candles. Candles always set a romantic mood which works perfectly with the idea of magic at Christmas.

Glassware

This is an opportunity to have some fun! Why not op-shop for your glassware, or mix and match two sets you already have at home! At the op shop you may just find a matching set in a complimentary colour to your palette, plus mixing and matching sets will add different heights and more texture to your table.

You can apply this to your crockery too, we are loving mismatched settings at the moment!

Linen

Continue the idea of creating a cosy space with a tablecloth to add warmth to the base of the table setting, along with linen napkins.

To add a personal touch, tie a name card to the napkin or attach a Christmas joke to each place setting. Customising a bonbon or bauble are also a great way of incorporating a point of difference that is a nod towards traditional Christmas decor.
