Our 5 Do's & Don'ts of Wedding Planning
Wedding planning can be both exciting and overwhelming; we would know! With our many years in the wedding industry, we have seen enough to know the do’s and don’ts of your wedding planning process. Instead of keeping it all to ourselves, we’ve compiled a list of the top 5 do’s and don'ts according to The Stylist’s Guide.
ONE
Don’t —Book a supplier without doing your research
Though their Instagram grid is perfected and the overly edited photos of wedding activations look exactly how you dreamed, have you checked their tagged photos? Don’t add more drama than necessary, do sound research to avoid last-minute cancellations, items arriving in the wrong condition and suppliers who will ghost your email until the week of your wedding.
Do — Read reviews
Make sure you’re 100% comfortable and confident with the vendors you book. Read every review and the fine print of every contract (even if that’s boring) and know exactly what you’re in for. Don’t be afraid to ask for samples, tastings and to see products in person — if a supplier wants your business, and backs themselves, they’ll be more than happy to do this for you.
TWO
Don’t — Have chair covers and/or sashes
We’re moving on from chair covers and sashes for good (we mean it). While we understand the concept, they too often overwhelm your other decor and can look tacky.
Do — Hire chairs instead
If the chairs supplied by your venue aren’t your vibe or style, don’t be afraid to hire chairs. Though they do add an extra expense, the overall look of your event will be elevated tenfold, and be better suited to your own style and vision.
THREE
Don’t — Forget to schedule in time (and a little more)
Getting your wedding set up and looking exactly how you envisioned it takes a village. Make sure when organising your schedule for the day to set aside more than enough time for set up, and allow for a little more just in case.
Do — Be prepared that things may go wrong
Sh*t happens and on a day as important as your wedding it does wonders to remember this. Things may go wrong, the set-up may run over; be prepared for anything and try not to let it get to you. When these little things happen remember that everyone is working hard so that you can stress less, and enjoy your big day.
FOUR
Don’t — Follow trends only because they’re a trend
The trend cycle is constantly moving, and always changing, especially in the wedding industry. Last year it was Cottagecore theming and a different reception dress; this year it’s private last dances and non-traditional guest books (like a phone photobooth) — we can’t even keep up and it’s our job too!
Do — Remember to do you!
Instead of following the flavour of the month, allow your wedding to reflect yourself and your loved one after all, it is actually all about you! Display your favourite colours through your florals. Not a dancer, play a game instead! Let your wedding speak about who you are, and be a day you can look back on and love for years to come.
FIVE
Don’t — Be afraid to say no
When a child learns the word ‘no’, it quickly becomes their favourite word; however, the older we get the harder it is to say it. During this season of your life, it’s essential for you to remember that you can say no and that you have every right to. whether that’s no to your floral arrangements, the joke your sister wants to share in her M.O.H. speech or because you simply don’t like something —say it, and say it loud and proud.
Do — Remember this is your wedding day
At the end of the day, your wedding is a day to celebrate you and the love of your life, and it’s a day you want to remember and cherish, forever. As they say, ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’, as long as you two are happy then that’s all that matters.
At the end of this, the most important takeaway is that it’s your wedding and you can follow as much, or as little advice as you wish. Never let a list stop you from making a decision that will make your day into your dream come true.
